The Effect of Povidone Iodine on Plaque and Salivary Bacteria. A Double‐blind Crossover Trial

Abstract: A double blind crossover trial was carried out to assess the effect of povidone iodine on plaque accumulation in vivo and to measure the total salivary aerobes and anaerobes throughout the study. When compared to the placebo preparation, povidone iodine was without effect on plaque accumulation in all the subjects and there was a progressive increase in plaque throughout the 10-day periods. A 30 to 40 % overall reduction in aerobes and anaerobes occurred with the active preparation which was significant. There… Show more

“…As a mouthwash at varying con-and the implantation of organisms by local centrations, a short time 'kill' and high per-anaesthetic injections limited (Blake & Forcentage 'kill' has been demonstrated against man 1967). Despite these oral antibacterial properties, povidone iodine mouthwash appears, when compared with chlorhexidine or with a placebo preparation, to bave little or no antiplaquc activity (Saxen et al 1976, Addy et al 1977. Since tbe antiplaque activity of chlorhexidine appears to be due to tbe retention of the drug within the moutb and its subsequent slow release (Rolla et al 1970(Rolla et al , 1971, it would seem possible tbat povidone iodine is witbout such a property.…”

“…Thirty minutes later, we examined the effect of cleansing on the total number of colony-forming-units (CFUs) of anaerobic organisms and C. albicans cells. All patients in the oral cleansing group performed oral rinsing with 50 ml of 0.5% povidone-iodine solution twice a day after surgery [24]. Seven days after surgery, between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. and before oral rinsing with povidone-iodine solution, gargle samples were obtained for microbial examination.…”
