The effect of pre-baiting on captures of rodents

Abstract: 267second litter the accuracy of estimation depends to higher degree on the total number of young born to female than on the number of litters. In general however the coincidence between the number of young and the numbers of placental scars is of high order and the method may prove helpful in studies concerned with reproduction of wild mouse and, possibly other closely related species.

“…2. Then the inhibition of reproduction occurred being associated with the increased mortality, and in July only 14.5°/o of females were reproducing while the density decreased to 65.4 rodents per ha (Babińska & Bock, 1969). In October the number of rodents was reduced to 34.5/ha, and in late spring of the next year it reached barely 5.5 individuals/ha.…”

“…(Grodziński et al, 1966). Prebaiting serves to reduce the bias due to variable probability of capture and tends to increase the removal rate (Babińska & Bock, 1969), at least during the first days of removal. Prebaiting is essential if the linear regression method (H a y n e, 1949) is used to estimate small mammal numbers (Grodziński et al, 1969).…”

“…Some of the animals living on the periphery of the grid must have the same P c as the residents. If the peripheral animals continued to distribute their activity on and off the grid their P c should be lower than that of the residents; prebaiting must shift the focal points of activity for these animals onto the grid (Babińska & Bock, 1969). Thus even if the data fit Hayne's regression model, the estimate will be higher than the number of animals present prior to prebaiting.…”
