The Effect of PtRuIr Nanoparticle Crystallinity in Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation

Abstract: Two structural forms of a ternary alloy PtRuIr/C catalyst, one amorphous and one highly crystalline, were synthesized and compared to determine the effect of their respective structures on their activity and stability as anodic catalysts in methanol oxidation. Characterization techniques included TEM, XRD, and EDX. Electrochemical analysis using a glassy carbon disk electrode for cyclic voltammogram and chronoamperometry were tested in a solution of 0.5 mol L−1 CH3OH and 0.5 mol L−1 H2SO4. Amorphous PtRuIr/C c… Show more

“…Chemical synthesis, including the chemical reduction methods in aqueous solution [55,56] or in organic solvents, [57][58][59] is common bottom-up assembly approach used to fabricate amorphous alloys apart from the fast cooling methods mentioned above. Unlike the fast cooling processes, the chemical reduction method is not limited by the glass forming ability of the components from solution.…”

“…The faster surface diffusion of hydroxyl species will further promote the CO-oxidation via a bi-functional mechanism [45,46] on PtIrCo-alloy surface during MOR. In addition, the promotional role of Ir along with Pt towards MOR, particularly towards COoxidation was observed in many other studies [17,19,[47][48][49]. On the other hand, selective adsorption of the oxygen species in comparison to the methanol molecules could have contributed to the observed methanol-tolerance and reduced mixed-potentials in PtIrCo-alloy compared to Pt-catalyst [4].…”
