“…Literature from high‐income settings suggests that nurses acquire experience in practice through a variety of ways. Reflection is recognized as an effective means by which nurses can develop their practice (Asselin, ; Asselin & Fain, ; Tsingos‐Lucas, Bosnic‐Anticevich, Bosnic‐Anticevich, Schneider, & Smith, )other ways include shadowing of experienced nurses and other health professionals on the ward, coaching, supervision and mentorship from existing experienced nurses; seeking clarity regarding the role; being given the opportunity to develop key knowledge and skills to meet their role (Jackson et al, ; Muleya, Marshall, Marshall, & Ashwin, ; Takase, ). In addition, developing expertise has been found to depend on the educational and experiential composition of other staff working in the ward, education level and years of experience of the nurse as well as the context where the nurse practices which may help or hinder expertise development by establishing a culture of professional nursing that encourages, values and gives opportunities for the development of nursing expertise (McHugh & Lake, ).…”
