Rejuvenators are used in the asphalt industry to improve the performance and durability of aged binders and facilitate the use of recycled asphalt materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of rejuvenator type and dose on the laboratory performance of asphalt binders. For this study, recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and extracted RAP binder were obtained from an airfield reconstruction project located in Atlantic City, NJ. One petroleum-based (aromatic extract) and three organic-based (corn oil, tall oil, and modified vegetable oil) rejuvenators were evaluated in this study. Each rejuvenator was used at two different rejuvenator doses (6% and 12% by total RAP binder weight) and was aged at three different levels. Performance grade testing, frequency sweep tests, critical temperature differential (ΔTc ), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were conducted. Results showed that the use of rejuvenators lowered the high and low performance grade of extracted RAP binders, in particular organic-based rejuvenators had a greater impact on the performance grade. ΔT c was also improved through the use of rejuvenators. In fact, the extracted RAP binder exceeded the high severity ΔTc threshold (−5°C), whereas the rejuvenated RAP binders improved ΔT c to values greater than the low severity threshold (−2.5°C). Similar findings were observed from the Glover-Rowe parameter as well, in which rejuvenated RAP binders improved the cracking resistance of the extracted RAP binder. When assessing the aging susceptibility, modified vegetable oil and corn oil rejuvenators showed the smallest change in performance between aging levels.

In this study, the low temperature creep properties of multiphase bituminous materials (binder, mastic, Fine Aggregate Matrix - FAM, and mixture) were experimentally evaluated, and the impact of size effect on FAM and mixture specimen was also assessed. First, the mix design of mastic and FAM were performed based on the reference mixture AC 22 TS. The mathematical adaptation to the boundary sieve method was applied to calculate FAM gradation and binder content. Next, a preparation method was proposed to produce Fine Aggregate Matrix (FAM) in a laboratory environment, and scale-up slab samples were also fabricated for FAM and mixture specimens to evaluate the size effect phenomenon. Finally, three-point bending (3PB) creep tests were conducted on the multiphase bituminous specimens with different dimensions at -6°C, -12°C, and − 18°C with a modified Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) device and a dynamic loading machine, depending on the sample size. Results indicate that the creep stiffness of the FAM was close to mixtures and much higher than the one observed in binder and mastic. The proposed fabrication approach provides a satisfactory method for preparing a representative FAM phase in the mixture, while the air voids can be easily adjusted during the slab compaction procedure. This study supports the idea of using FAM to discriminate asphalt mixtures for cold regions. The correlation between up-scaled FAM and mixtures specimens is recommended to be further investigated, including different mixture types and corresponding FAM.

Estimating the actual production rate of construction machinery which clearly differs from nominal production provided by machinery manufacturers always is a critical challenge in construction projects execution. Studies indicate that true estimation of actual production is a key element in estimating the time and cost required to terminate construction operations. However, current literature shows that it is still a quite challenging to estimate actual production. In particular, there are various independent parameters that affect the actual production rate. Understanding the role and importance of each parameter could lead to an accurate estimation for production rates. To this end, this paper presents a statistical-based approach to find the discrepancies between the nominal and actual production rates of crawler-type dozers and to understand how various parameters could affects the actual production rates. The data for the actual production of machine were records from productivity measurement of 39 dozers. Working condition, type of materials, and ground slope are three main independent parameters considered and evaluated for each machine. The results obtained from statistical analyses on the data and a comparison between these results with the data provided by Caterpillar and Komatsu manufacturers show a) the discrepancies between the actual and nominal hourly production, b) the effect of individual parameters on actual production, and c) the relationship between machinery working age and discrepancies. The findings of this study could be a unique help for project managers in planning of machinery and equipment in a project site.
