The effect of religious fasting and dehydration at Ramadan on choroidal thickness and Retinal vessel densities, measured with optical coherence tomography angiography

Abstract: Aim: To investigate the effect of religious fasting and dehydration at Ramadan on choroidal thickness and vessel density in the superficial and deep vascular plexuses with OCTA. Methods: The choroidal thickness, and superficial and deep vessel density indices of fasting healthy subjects were measured with an OCTA device, and compared with non-fasting measurements. Results: The study included 70 eyes of 35 healthy subjects with a mean age of 42.86 ± 8.3 years. The measured choroidal thickness, superficial vesse… Show more

“…Three articles were published on eye structure and function during RF. 78 79 80 First, the effect of RF and dehydration on intraocular pressure (IOP) and biometric parameters in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients was evaluated in a prospective study. They included 30 eyes of 30 POAG fasting patients, 40 healthy participants, and 40 nonfasting healthy individuals.…”

“…An investigation has found no substantial changes in retinal thickness during IF ( 25 ), which might be due to a stringent self-regulatory system in the retina when perfusion pressures fluctuate dramatically ( 26 , 27 ). Previously, animal studies found that retinal blood flow self-regulates in a similar manner ( 28 ).…”

“…In addition, there is a connection between neuromodulation and sub choroidal thickness. During IF, blood pressure drops, cardiac blood flow drops ( 33 ), and choroidal thickness under fovea increases when sympathetic tone drops and parasympathetic tone rises ( 16 , 25 ). The choroidal thickness under the fovea increased by nearly 3% during the fasting period compared to the non-fasting period ( 25 ).…”

“…While fasting did not lead to any change in LD and CCT, the results demonstrated that it caused a slight decrease in ACD and ACV and a significant decrease in CD and IOP values. Gokmen and Ozgur [57] investigated the effect of religious fasting and dehydration during Ramadan on the choroidal thickness and vessel density in the superficial and deep vascular plexuses with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) of 70 eyes of 35 healthy subjects with a mean age of 43 years. The measured choroidal thickness, superficial vessel density index, and deep vessel density index were 288.89 μm, 40.6%, and 41.4%, respectively, compared to 284.62 μm, 40.41%, and 41.41%, respectively when measured in the nonfasting period.…”
