Vegetation restoration is an important way to improve karst ecosystems. Currently, research on the hydrological effects of vegetation restoration in karst areas has made great progress. However, the results obtained from the relevant studies have some limitations and uncertainties. Thus, this paper summarizes the research progress on the effects of karst vegetation restoration on five aspects: soil moisture, evapotranspiration, surface and subsurface runoff, water use efficiency and utilization strategies, and runoff generation and sink processes. The research showed that the existing studies’ evidence of the influence of vegetation restoration on runoff is still contradictory, with some suggesting that vegetation restoration can reduce soil moisture and runoff value, and others saying it can increase it. Furthermore, the ability of different types of vegetation to recover from water deficits varies across time scales, so focusing on spatial and temporal variations in evapotranspiration in karst regions is important. This article investigates water use efficiency in karst areas, as it is mainly controlled by vegetation types, climatic conditions, human activities and geological conditions, meaning the hydrogeological structure of karst has a very fundamental influence on water use efficiency in that region, we also investigate the effects of subsurface conditions in karst areas on the runoff generation and sink process as well as the type and stage of vegetation restoration, and geological factors affect vegetation restoration. Studies on the hydrological effects of vegetation restoration, however, are based on the relationship with a single element, describing its spatial and temporal variability, and they do not sufficiently quantify the reaction principles. This article also analyzes the problems and challenges in current studies, and proposes a combination of geophysical detection, establishing a dynamic model of the co-evolution of karst ecohydrology and surface karst zone mean with fieldwork to further verify the scientific validity of the results.

Based on the hidden karst exposed in Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station, combined with the field exploration data, the temporal and spatial development characteristics of hidden karst in the power station area are analyzed using the methods of specific solubility and specific corrosion, water chemical composition analysis, borehole television imaging, tracer test, and water pressure test. The results show that the karst development in the study area can be divided into three periods: pre-Cretaceous, Pleistocene, and modern karst. Karst development is controlled by soluble rock, non-soluble rock, and their combination, and the development direction is basically consistent with the fault strike. Karst caves are mainly distributed below the elevation of 100 m, with different shapes and scales and randomness. Non-soluble rocks and impure carbonate rocks are widely distributed in the study area, and surface karst is not developed. The underground karst caves are filled with red clay, and the rate of groundwater circulation is slow. The existence of geological bodies such as rock veins causes the groundwater levels to have obvious double-layer characteristics, which results in weak connectivity between karst caves. Although the karst in the power station area has a certain hydraulic connection with the surface water outside the area, the hydraulic connection of karst in the power station area is generally weak. The research results provide a scientific basis for the anti-seepage measures of underground powerhouses.

Karst groundwater resources are rich, and they have important water supply significance. A karst reservoir is a means of exploiting and utilizing groundwater resources, but because of the complex hydrogeological structure and underground river pipeline in a karst area, the seepage problem of the reservoir is extremely serious. Therefore, the Yibasan Karst Reservoir (YKR) was selected as the focus of this study. The hydrogeological structure of the subterranean river system of Yutang (SRSY) was identified and the hydraulic connections between the subterranean river conduits were determined using tracer experiment and groundwater dynamic monitoring. Furthermore, the development location and depth of the karst seepage zone of the YKR were determined using geophysical exploration. The results showed that there were three subterranean river conduits in the SRSY, and there was no hydraulic connection. The northern and southern pressure and torsion faults on the sides constitute the impervious boundary of the SRSY, which provided good catchment conditions for the formation of the YKR. Additionally, the northern and main conduits of the SRSY provide a sufficient groundwater source for the YKR. Moreover, the development width of the karst seepage zone of the YKR ranges between 40 and 60 m, and the elevation ranges between 1275 and 1355 m. The research results not only provide an effective basis for the treatment of the karst seepage problem of the YKR but also provide an important reference for the development and utilization of groundwater resources in similar karst areas.
