The effect of resource limitation on the temperature dependence of mosquito population fitness

Abstract: Laboratory-derived temperature dependencies of life-history traits are increasingly being used to make mechanistic predictions for how climatic warming will affect vector-borne disease dynamics, partially by affecting abundance dynamics of the vector population. These temperature–trait relationships are typically estimated from juvenile populations reared on optimal resource supply, even though natural populations of vectors are expected to experience variation in resource supply, including intermittent resour… Show more

“…The salmon study also showed a decrease in Tmax of approximately 10°C. Food limitation also decreased Topt and Tmax for population growth rate by about 6°C in mosquitoes (Huxley et al 2021). In some studies, however, a zooplankter Daphnia's survival at high temperature was higher when fed low phosphorus algae or poor food quality cyanobacteria (Starke et al 2021, Sarrazin andSperfeld 2022), suggesting that the effects of resource limitation may differ depending on the temporal scale of responses (Sarrazin and Sperfeld 2022).…”

“…A geographical feature of these countries is a hot, humid climate and the presence of a fairly large number of small and small water bodies -habitats for the larvae of the malaria mosquito. The work [3] presents data that the temperature conditions of such reservoirs are very favorable for them. In turn, such spaces are often difficult to access.…”
