“…Scaffolding provides cognitive prompts and hints to learners during complex learning. It provides ongoing diagnosis, calibrated support, and fading in learning through expert guidance and social collaboration with more capable peers (Jeffries & Maeder, 2009). The current approach to scaffolding has been described at best as pragmatic and being criticized as atheoretical, failing to link its practice with theories (Palincsar, 1998;Puntambekar & Hubscher, 2005).…”

“…Because of their brief nature, vignettes are a strategic way to explore understanding related to a particular topic, such as mathematics content, the MPs, the MTPs, or the connections among these. Vignettes have been used in a variety of ways with teachers (e.g., Angelides & Gibbs, 2006; Jochums & Pershey, 1993), those in graduate education courses (e.g., Jeffries & Maeder, 2005, 2009), and with PSTs (e.g., Brovelli et al., 2014; Herman, 1998; Tasar, 2006). Brovelli and colleagues (2014) developed what they called vignette tests to examine science PSTs’ professional competencies, finding that utilizing vignettes allowed them to effectively assess these competencies within the context of teaching.…”

“…While isolationism is rampant in in-service teaching, the capacity to provide and receive critical and constructive feedbackwhich can come about through collaborative reflectionis fundamental to the growth of the teaching profession, thus rendering pre-service teacher education an ideal time to have future educators develop these practices (Daniel, Auhl, & Hastings, 2013). Some researchers have explored the use of vignettes (descriptive accounts of a teaching situation) to prompt PSTs' reflection (e.g., Jeffries & Maeder, 2009;Wilkerson, Kerschen, & Shelton, 2018). Research suggests that these opportunities are helpful for PSTs to be able to grapple with and later reflect upon various teaching events within the confines of a teacher education program.…”
