Listening is a skill that is sometimes forgotten when learning a language. Although it may appear challenging, listening abilities can be improved over time if practiced regularly. This study aimed to see if the genre-based approach (GBA) could be used to teach listening. This study employed a qualitative design. The participants of this study were a teacher and 15 students of grade 11 (eleven) of Senior High school in Medan, Indonesia, consisting of nine males and six female students. The English teacher was chosen because she is a senior teacher who has applied 2013 curriculum and used genre-based English learning in grade eleven (11) students of an old high school in Medan. This study applied the data collection techniques by conducting classroom observation and interviews. The findings presented that the GBA with four cycles of learning model applied by the teacher was considered capable of helping students in listening learning. It can help students recognize text variations, vocabulary, and structures in the text, which were also students' provisions in the listening process.

This study deals with the investigation of semantic mapping technique in teaching reading recount text. It was intended to find out the teacher’s way in using semantic mapping technique in teaching reading recount text; and students’ perceptions toward the implementation of semantic mapping technique in teaching reading recount text. In addition, the writer used the theory from Schmitt (2002, p. 44) who explained about teacher’s ways in implementing semantic mapping word technique in teaching reading comprehension. The writer used qualitative research with the type of case study involving an English teachers and the students of eighth grade. To collect the data, classroom observation, interview, and questionnaire were utilized. The findings indicated that the teacher implemented the steps in conducting semantic mapping strategy as suggested by Schmitt (2002, p. 44. In addition, the students also enjoy the teaching learning process using the technique of semantic mapping. Furthermore, the major conclusion of this study indicated that the teacher was able to apply the semantic mapping technique that encourages the students to develop their reading skill. Regarding the weakness of this research, the present study did not point out specific factors influencing students’ motivation in learning Semantic mapping. Thus, it is recommended that further researchers should investigate teacher’s perception on implementing the technique of semantic mapping in the teaching-learning process. The research aims to develop genre-based English worksheets for the Basic English course and assess the validity of student worksheets of vocational students. This study explores worksheet development using a 4-D development model with stages of definition, design, development, and dissemination. This study employed research and development design. The instrument used was an observation by analyzing student needs involving vocational students at Akademi Komunitas Negeri Putra Sang Fajar Blitar, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Politeknik Negeri Medan, and Universitas Bengkulu. In define stage, this writing worksheets are emphasized with a reflective thinking approach so that students understand the material presented without obstacles. The independent learning curriculum is the basis for enriching the quality of learning to create education with more character. In design stage, reflective thinking strategies are designed to train students' reflective thinking skills in writing texts in the form of long, genre-based functional texts. In development stage, material feasibility tests, language use, and appearance are tested by validators through a validation process. The development of this worksheet began to develop through criticism and ideas on the validator sheet that had been provided. Further revisions and analysis are carried out to then produce the final writing worksheet. In disseminate stage, Module distribution was also carried out for vocational higher education in English to disseminate student writing worksheets to other vocational universities in the form of e-books and printed books.
