PURPOSE:To evaluate the bioactive resin modified GIC material (Activa) vs. conventional one (Vitremer) clinically and laboratory. Materials & Methods: Clinically:Fifteen healthy children of both sexes aged (4-7) having a bilateral similar initial occlusal caries on the lower 2 nd primary molars were selected. A split-mouth design was used where conventional Class I cavities were prepared on carious molars. One side was restored with Activa and the contra-lateral side restored with Vitremer (control). The patients were recalled for clinical evaluation at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperative. The modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) evaluation criteria were used. Laboratory: included: 1. Mechanical strength tests (compressive and diametral tensile). 2. Shear bond strength test between both restorative materials and dentin. Statistical analysis: Mann Whitney test was used for clinical evaluation, while t-test and ANOVA were used for laboratory evaluation. The significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: Clinically:The overall clinical outcome showed no significant difference between both groups in all evaluated criteria (p>0.05). Laboratory: Activa showed higher values than Vitremer in all tested groups and the differences were significant (p<0.05) Conclusion: Activa recorded better scores than Vitremer in nearly all tested clinical criteria but without significant differences between them during recall-time intervals. But, the laboratory differences in all tested groups were significant.

Aim: To compare the surface roughness, microtensile bond strength (µTBS), and flexural strength of polypropylene (PP) fibers reinforced glass ionomer cements (GICs). Materials and Methods: A comparative in vitro study was designed to test the PP fiber reinforced GIC, which was formed when 0.5–1 mm length PP fibers were added into the powder of conventional GIC. Four groups were prepared (Group 1: control, Group 2: 1 wt% PP fiber, Group 3: 3 wt% PP fiber, and Group 4: 5 wt% PP fiber) to evaluate flexural strength, surface roughness values, and µTBS. A total of 10 samples with 25 × 2.5 × 5 mm dimensions were prepared for each group to test flexural strength. Disk-shaped specimens ( n = 10) of 2 mm thickness and 10 mm diameter were used to test surface roughness. A total of 24 human primary molar teeth were used to evaluate µTBS, and 12 sticks were obtained for each group. The fractured surface analyses of samples from µTBS was performed using scanning electron microscope. The data obtained from the experiments were recorded and analyzed with one-way analyses of variance technique, and the normality was tested using the Shapiro–Wilk technique. A significance level of .05 was used. Results: In flexural strength tests, Group 3 (3 wt% PP fiber) showed significantly increased values ( p < .05) when compared with other groups. Group 4 (5 wt% PP) showed significantly highest values in surface roughness tests ( p < .05). No significant differences were seen between the groups ( p > .05) according to µTBS results. More PP fibers were seen in fractured surfaces, when PP ratio increases. Conclusion: It was observed that increased PP fiber percentage showed increased surface roughness, and 3 wt% PP fiber gave optimal values for fracture toughness. Incorporation of PP fiber to GIC does not affect the bonding to primary tooth dentine.

Aim. Glass ionomer (GIC) is a widely used restorative material in dentistry, but it has relatively weak mechanical properties. In this research, the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on the flexural strength of GIC was investigated. Materials and Methods. In this experimental study, 60 GIC samples in 6 groups of 10 were prepared, including Group 1: control conventional glass ionomer (CGIC), Group 2: CGIC + 1% wt of GO, Group 3: CGIC + 2% wt of GO, Group 4: control resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), Group 5: RMGI + 1% wt of GO, and Group 6: RMGI + 2% wt of GO. The samples were kept for 24 hours. The flexural strength of the samples was measured by using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and posthoc Tukey test. ( P < 0.05 ). Results. In the RMGI groups, the mean flexural strength value of the RMGI + 2% GO group was significantly higher than that of the RMGI control group ( P = 0.027 ). In the comparison of RMGI groups with their corresponding CGIC groups, the mean flexural strength values of all RMGI groups were significantly more than CGIC groups ( P < 0.001 ). RMGI + 1% GO was not significantly different from control RMGI and RMGI + 2% GO ( P = 0.802 , P = 0.395 , respectively). There was no significant difference between CGIC groups. Conclusion. Adding 2% by weight of GO to RMGI increases the flexural strength of RMGI, which could be of great importance in clinical practice in order to reinforce the mechanical properties of this dental material. The flexural strength of RMGI is higher than that of CGIC.
