The Effect of Smoking during Pregnancy on Severity and Directionality of Externalizing and Internalizing Symptoms: A Genetically Informed Approach

Abstract: The objective was to examine the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy (SDP) and (I) severity and (II) directionality of externalizing and internalizing symptoms in a sample of sibling pairs while rigorously controlling for familial confounds. The Missouri Mothers and Their Children Study is a family study (N = 173 families) with sibling pairs (aged 7 to 16 years) who are discordant for exposure to SDP. This sibling comparison study is designed to disentangle the effects of SDP from familial co… Show more

“…Conversely, if the discordant siblings do not differ in psychopathology, the observed association is explained by unmeasured genetic and environmental factors. For example, the results of studies with sibling design have supported causal relationships between prenatal exposure to tobacco [ 40 ], alcohol [ 41 ], and obstetrical complications [ 42 ] and subsequent psychopathology.…”

“…Parental smoking was not a factor in this study. However, it has been reported to be associated with child behavioral problems and child development [ 46 ]. This study did not ask about previous smoking, and as the answer is self-managed, it is difficult to grasp the actual situation.…”

“…Maternal smoking during pregnancy has been associated with numerous offspring outcomes, such as low birth weight (Knopik et al, 2016b), disruptive behavior problems (Ekblad et al, 2020a(Ekblad et al, , 2020b, neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD (Buck et al, 2021;Knopik et al, 2016a;, reading and language performance (Micalizzi et al, 2021), and academic difficulties (Martin & Dombrowski, 2008). Despite its well-documented risks, maternal smoking during pregnancy remains prevalent, with roughly 7% of women reporting use during the prenatal period (Azagba et al, 2020).…”
