The effect of Solar irradiance on the power quality behaviour of grid connected photovoltaic systems

Abstract: Photovoltaic systems have been increasingly used in the generation of electrical energy, either as a means of providing electricity in areas where there is no grid connection (stand alone systems), or by providing electricity to the grid (grid connected systems). In a deregulated energy market, the cost of energy produced from fossil fuels is rising and the photovoltaic energy becomes a promising alternative source. Yet it still suffers from problems that need to be resolved in order to be widely accepted as a… Show more

“…Otherwise, on fixed temperature and irradiance increases, then average current harmonics also increases. The lowest average current harmonics is generated at irradiation of 400 W/m 2 ) and fixed temperature (25 0 C), average current harmonics also increases. Double tuned filter is mostly effective to suppress 11 th and 13 th harmonics so it can migitate both average voltage harmonics and average current harmonics, better than system with single tuned filter which can only decrease 5 th harmonics.…”

“…PQ problems will depend on irradiation and the overall performance of the PV systems including the module, inverters, filters controlling mechanisms, etc. Good PQ translates into a sinusoidal voltage and current output from a PV system that avoids harmonics, interharmonics and eventually voltage distortion [11].…”

“…Since the produced current is related to the solar conditions and in particular to the irradiance, a passive pyranometer is installed close to the solar panels [20]. The pyranometer output voltage is digitized by the measurement instrument simultaneously to the acquired current signal.…”
