Ethnopharmacological relevanceAnemia is a very serious condition in Zambia. One of the plants that has been used traditionally is Phyllanthus muellerianus where different parts of shrub are used to treat a number of diseases in Zambian folklore medicine. Earlier studies have investigated medicinal properties of its aqueous root extracts. This study evaluated the effect of P. muellerianus roots on the hematological indices of albino rats and determined its phytochemical profile. Aim of the studyTo carry out phytochemical screening of the root extract and assess the ant-anemic effect of the aqueous extract on laboratory rats with tail-bled induced anemia Materials and MethodsThirty-six male albino rats placed in six groups were used for the study. The groups comprised the 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg plant extract, Ranferon (200 mg/kg) positive control, anemic non treated control and a normal (non-anemic) control. Anemia, induced through bleeding of the rats, was defined as hemoglobin (Hb) levels less than 12 g/dL. The anti-anemic potential of the plant was determined by comparing its effect on the hematological parameters of rats on treatment to that of the control group.ResultsAfter treatment, rats on the 400 mg/kg plant extract dose showed the greatest increase in the mean values for Hb, Packed cell volume (PCV) and RBC count were 43.3±1.2%, 15.4±0.3 g/dL and 6.3±0.3 x106 /mL respectively, when compared to the negative control group (P < 0.05). Phytochemical screening revealed positive results for alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, steroids, triterpenoids and tannins with varying amounts.Conclusions. The aqueous root extract of P. muellerianus was efficacious against anemia in a dose-dependent manner. The phytochemical compositions seem to be responsible for its hematopoietic properties. Thus, the root decoction of P. muellerianus is useful in alleviating anemia and the results lend credence to its use in traditional medicine in the management of anemia.

Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) have gained great interest as a non-traditional feed ingredient due to their unique nutritional value. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of graded dietary supplementation levels with MOL on performance, carcass characteristics, antioxidant capacity, blood biochemical constituents, meat quality, and fatty acids profile of growing rabbits. A total of 120 weaned New Zealand white rabbits (6 weeks old) were randomly allotted into 4 dietary groups with 5 replicates each (n = 6), which were fed for 42 days with a basal diet as control or 3 experimental diets supplemented with 5, 10, or 15 g/kg MOL. The results showed that, compared to the control group, the dietary inclusion of MOL at a level of 10 and 15 g/kg DM linearly increased (p < 0.01) final live weight (2403.3 and 2498.2 vs. 2166.6) and average daily weight gain (36.5 and 35.51 g/d vs. 28.72 g/d), and enhanced feed conversion ratio (2.49 and 2.50 vs. 3.14). The dietary supplementation with MOL linearly increased dressing out percentage, spleen index, intestinal length, and decreased abdominal fat index (p < 0.01). Greater serum levels of total protein and globulin, but lower alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase were observed in the MOL-fed rabbits (p < 0.01). Serum levels of total triglycerides, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (p < 0.05) were decreased linearly and quadratically in the MOL groups compared with the control. Glutathione peroxidase activity increased (p < 0.01), whereas malondialdehyde decreased (p < 0.01) linearly and quadratically in both serum and meat, in response to dietary MOL supplementation. Dietary MOL supplementation increased the meat crude protein content but lowered the relative content of ether extract in the meat (p < 0.05). The relative content of the meat n-3 PUFA was increased by about 33.71%, 29.46%, and 24.36% for the MOL0.5%, MOL1%, and MOL1.5% groups compared to control. In conclusion, MOL could be used at a level of 1.5g/kg of the growing rabbits’ diets with beneficial impacts on performance, antioxidant capacity, and the nutritional value of the meat.

Anemia, a widespread global health challenge, can be induced through exposure to deleterious substances such as aluminum chloride. The present investigation explores the potential ameliorative effects of Moringa concanensis - a plant acknowledged for its myriad medicinal virtues-against anemia induced by aluminium chloride. The study objective was to scrutinize the impact of Moringa concanensis on aluminium chloride-induced anemia in Wistar rats. In the experimental design, thirty Wistar rats were randomly distributed into five distinct groups: a normal control group (untreated), a diseased control group (administered with aluminium chloride at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg body weight), a standard group (treated with Ferrous ascorbate at 30 mg/kg body weight), and two groups receiving low and high doses of Moringa concanensis (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively). All groups, with the exception of the normal control, were exposed to aluminium chloride at a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg body weight over a span of 14 days. Hematological indicators were evaluated following standard methodologies, serum ferritin levels were assessed through Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA), and vitamin B12 concentration was quantified using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, histopathological alterations were identified through Hematoxylin and Eosin staining procedures. Statistical data were interpreted through one-way ANOVA, succeeded by Tukey’s post hoc analysis, considering a p-value below 0.05 as statistically significant. Upon 21 days of continuous treatment with Moringa concanensis, both low and high-dose groups exhibited elevation in hematological parameters, serum ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and vitamin B12 in comparison to the diseased control group. Noteworthy findings were observed in the high-dose group (400 mg/kg body weight), displaying significant improvement compared to the diseased control group (P<0.001). Remarkably, the high-dose regimen restored hematological parameters to baseline levels and mirrored the efficacy observed with the standard drug (Ferrous ascorbate). These empirical findings underscore the potential of Moringa concanensis as a promising therapeutic candidate for the alleviation of aluminium chloride-induced anemia. These results pave the way for future research endeavors to unravel the precise mechanisms driving these protective effects.
