Whereas memory enhancement can be viewed as generally beneficial to many individuals, agents being developed are almost exclusively for some form of impairment. The memory‐enhancing drugs therapeutically available offer only symptomatic relief rather than slowing or stopping the progression of dementia. The greatest effort in development has been in the areas of cerebral metabolism and neurotransmission enhancers. Cerebral vasodilators and nootropics have both been developed for usage, as have cholinergic enhancers.
