Aim: This study was designed to determine the relationship between depression and spirituality in hemodialysis patients in a dialysis center. Material and Method: The research is in the type of descriptive research. The current study was conducted with 74 patients hemodialysis. Ethics committee approval and institutional permission were obtained before starting the study. The data of the study was collected by applying “Personal Information Form”, “Beck Depression Inventory” and “Spiritual Well-Being Scale”. The data were collected face to face using the questionnaire method. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, t-test, Anova test and correlation analysis were used. Results: More than half of the patients were 51 years and over (54.1%) and 60.8% were male. When the Beck Depression Inventory's scores were analyzed according to the cut-off point, it was found that 58.1% of the patients showed depressive symptoms. In the study, BDI mean score was 19.27±7.31, SWBS mean score was 18.74±10.8 (Subscales: Peace 5.70±3.52, Meaning 6.27±3.67, Faith 6.75±3.97). Aim: This study was conducted descriptively to determine the effects of the spiritual orientation of hemodialysis patients on their levels of hopelessness. Method: The study sample consisted of 100 hemodialysis patients treated at Ondokuz Mayıs University Health Application and Research Center (OMUHARC) hemodialysis unit, nephrology service and City Health Center affiliated to OMUHARC between July 2017 and May 2018. The data were collected using patient introductory information forms, Spiritual Orientation Scale (SOS) and Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS). The compliance of the data to normal distribution was examined using the Shapiro Wilk test. Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests were used to compare data that did not conform to normal distribution. Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the scales. Result: The patients' average age was 56.7±14.4, 59% were male, 80% were married, 53% were diagnosed with chronic renal failure 1-5 years ago, 75% had been receiving hemodialysis treatment for 1-5 years and 63% had another chronic disease. The mean total score of SOS was 99.57±15.51. The mean BHS total score was 5.68 ± 4.43; while the emotions and expectations about the future sub-dimension mean total score was 1.2 ± 1.29, that of the motivation loss sub-dimension was 2.56±1.89, whereas that of the hope sub-dimension was 1.91±1.82. BACKGROUND: The frequency of hemodialysis therapy routinely affected change in the functional state of the body. Support is one of the factors that can affect life quality. One of the supports can come from nurses through a spiritual caring attitude. AIM: The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between spiritual caring and the life quality of patients who were undergoing hemodialysis. METHOD: A literature review was obtained from PubMed and Google Scholar databases (2015–2020) with the keywords Spiritual Care AND Life quality AND Patients with Hemodialysis. RESULTS: Based on nine journals that have been reviewed, spiritual caring behavior that was applied in the form of intervention or spiritual therapy had been proven to have a positive impact on the life quality of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Spiritual interventions in the form of spiritual counseling, deep breathing relaxation exercises based on spiritual elements, and therapy combined with elements of prayer and dhikr were able to give the spirit of the patient in dealing with the illness. Overall, spiritual intervention affected the life quality with p = 0.000–0.032 (α = 0.05), increasing the life quality in physical, psychological, and social and environmental relations. CONCLUSION: The results show a relationship of spiritual caring with the life quality of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
