The effect of stimulus strength on the jaw-jerk response in man.

Abstract: S U M MARY The jaw-jerk response was elicited in seven adult male subjects by tapping on the chin in a downward direction. Tho jaw-jerk response, elicited in jaw-closing muscles by a downward tap on the chin, is sometimes used as a clinical test of the integrity of the trigeminal neuromuscular pathways. The test is applied in a qualitative;fashion, where simply the presence or absence of a muscle response is recorded, using electromyographic techniques. Some attempts to quantify the response of the masseter mus… Show more

“…Additional OME items were added based on our previous findings of abnormal articulator range of motions and speeds in bulbar disease (37)(38)(39)(40)(41). A "jaw jerk reflex" item was also added based on high relevance to ALS, despite previous concerns about the reliability of this item (42,43). A total of 16 OME items were included in the first draft of ALS-BDI: 14 of those items assessed the tongue, lips/face (combined) and jaw for weakness, range of motion, speed, atrophy, and fasciculation (excluding jaw fasciculations), and the remaining two items assessed facial and jaw jerk reflexes.…”

“…The masseteric silent period is extensively studied [1]. The set-ups for the jaw-jerk studies examining the duration of the masseteric spindle -induced silent period necessitates the pre-existing clenching-activation of jaw muscles prior to the chin tapping, which is the actual stretch-stimulus [ [42]]. Studies examining the duration of masseteric silent period employ pre-existing masseteric activity before the controlled tap-or push-stimulus [35,36] produced consistent and repeatable measurements of the duration of the silent period.…”

“…The study recognized the major target proteins including lipoprotein metabolism, nuclear transport and ribonucleoprotein, followed by the possible binding interfaces. To the end, a network study showed 332 human proteins interacting with SARS-CoV-2 viral genes and developed a first interactome model for SARS-CoV-2 and human protein interactions (Gordon et al 2020 ). Still at present, scientific community struggling with proper knowledge of the molecular basis of SARS-CoV-2 disease prevents a complete assessment of small lead candidates for host-directed therapies.…”
