The Effect of Task Performance and Partnership on Interpersonal Brain Synchrony during Cooperation

Abstract: Interpersonal brain synchrony (IBS) during cooperation has not been systematically investigated. To address this research gap, this study assessed neural synchrony during a cooperative jigsaw puzzle solving task using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based hyperscanning. IBS was measured for successful and failed tasks in 31 dyads in which the partners were familiar or unknown to each other. No significant difference in IBS was observed between the different types of cooperative partnership; howev… Show more

“…Evidence indicated that FPA (BA10) is significant in self-other social interactions (Ruby and Decety, 2004). Besides, functions of Broca's area (BA45) have been expanded beyond verbal cognition, such as motion observation (Caspers et al, 2010) and involvement in cooperation (Zhou et al, 2022). Our results further enrich the social functions of the Broca's area (BA45).…”

“…(3) By tracking the progression of working memory tasks, fNIRS revealed a link between brain activity and task performance (Meidenbauer et al, 2021). During cooperative tasks, better task performance was associated with interpersonal brain synchronization (Zhou et al, 2022). Patients with schizophrenia (SZ) performed worse on the VFT than patients with MDD and healthy controls, and patients performed worse on the Tower of London task than healthy controls (Xiang et al, 2021).…”

“…One limitation of "averaged" measures is that do not consider changes in IBC that reflect the dynamic nature of social interaction. Thus, researchers have recently proposed a novel analytical approach that captures dynamic changes in IBC ("Dynamic Inter-brain Coherence"; Li et al, 2021;S. Zhou et al, 2022).…”
