“…More recently it was found that taurine fails to reduce lipid peroxidation, although it preserves the membrane organization of isolated rod outer segments and cultured human lymphoblastoid cells exposed to ferrous sulfate and retinoids, respectively [Pasantes-Morales and Cruz, 1984;Pasantes-Morales et al, 19841. These findings support an alternate hypothesis that the protective action of taurine might be related to its action on membrane permeability [Pasantes-Morales, 19861, as its effects on ion transport have been shown in a number of preparations [Gruener and Bryant, 1975;Pasantes-Morales et al, 1979, 1981aPasantes-Morales and Gamboa, 1980;Kruzinger and Hamprecht, 19811. It seems possible, therefore, that taurine plays a role in osmoregulation and protects photoreceptors from excessive influx of ions and water, which seems to result in the swelling of outer segments and mitochondria observed in the present study.…”

“…45Calcium accumulation by retinal subcellular fractions isolated from the chick retina is decreased when taurine is present in the incubation medium (34). This action of taurine is detected in a crude synaptosomal fraction containing pinched-off "conventional" nerve endings, as well as in isolated rod outer segments (34). Similar results were obtained by Huxtable et al (17) using a sarcolemma preparation.…”

“…For this purpose, the effect of taurine on calcium transport was examined in various nervous preparations. 45Calcium accumulation by retinal subcellular fractions isolated from the chick retina is decreased when taurine is present in the incubation medium (34). “…The modulation by taurine of calciummembrane interactions has been reported for various preparations, including rod outer segments [Pasantes-Morales et al, 1979Azari and Huxtable, 19801. Through this interaction, taurine might be contributing to membrane stabilization, and thus protect photoreceptor structure.…”
