“…The presence of aminergic neurosecretory cells in nematodes has been suggested by ultrastructural studies on P. decipiens and Haemonchus contorrus (Davey, 1976). Other studies have indicated a metabolic role for noradrenaline in H. contortus larvae (Rogers & Head, 1972) and a reproductive one for 5-HT in A . tetraptera (Anya, 1973~).…”

“…While aminergic cells become depleted, peptidergic cells become more prominent, the former preceding the latter in time (Davey 1966;Goh 1975). Noradrenalin appears to be involved in the chain of events leading to exsheathment of ,the third-stage larva in Haemonchus contortus (Rogers and Head 1972;Davey et al 1982), and will cause ensheathed Phocanema to ecdyse (Goh 1975). Whether the amine acts directly on the excretory cell or acts indirectly via peptidergic cells is a problem which can be approached with the techniques outlined here.…”

“…Localization experiments using techniques such as formaldehyde-induced fluorescence, have shown catecholamines to be present in many nematode species (HORVITZ et al, 1982;MISHRA etal., 1984;LEE & Ko, 1991). Noradrenaline (NA) would appear to play a part in the ecdysis of certain nematodes; stimulation of the development of Haemonchus contortus leads to a large increase in their NA content (ROGERS & HEAD, 1972;SHISOV, 1980). DAVEY et al (1982) demonstrated that treatment of worms with exogenous NA initiated changes in the excretory cells which accompany the normal ecdysial process.…”
