The effect of the type of anesthesia on the quality of postoperative recovery after orthopedic forearm surgery

Abstract: Background: Although the quality of postoperative recovery may be affected by factors, there are few investigations whether the type of anesthesia also affects it. In this single-blinded, prospective, observational study, we compared the quality of postoperative recovery in patients undergoing orthopedic forearm surgery under general or regional anesthesia (brachial plexus block). Methods: Ninety-seven subjects, aged 18-65 years and American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II, undergoing orth… Show more

“…27 Another study found no difference on the quality of postoperative recovery after orthopedic forearm surgery between brachial plexus block and general anesthesia, but in that study measurements were performed 24 h after surgery. 29 The lack of difference may be because as the effect of the nerve block wore off, the patient experienced severe rebound pain, which lowered the QoR score. 4 Our patients who received CISB consistently had NRS pain scores of 3 or lower, indicating satisfactory analgesia.…”

“…Agreement between reviewers for relevance (k=0.85) and eligibility (k=1) was considered excellent. Ultimately we included three RCTs (36,39,40), two retrospective cohort studies (34,35) and one prospective cohort study (37). All studies were published in English between 2012 and 2020.…”

“…Study characteristics are summarized in Table 1 and for more details see Supplementary Table 4, Additional File 1. Five studies assessed clinical outcomes of the wrist using infraclavicular block (34,36,37,39,40), and one evaluated the shoulder joint using an interscalene block approach (35). The surgical indication was distal radial fracture xation (34,36,39,40), proximal humerus fracture xation (35) and multiples wrist surgery (e.g.…”

“…The QoR-40 has been used numerous times to measure patients’ recovery after different surgeries [ 8 , 9 ]. In addition, this questionnaire seems to be a reliable tool for assessing other techniques, including regional blocks [ 10 ].…”
