The effect of transition metal and heavy metal incorporation on the structural, optical and electrical properties of zinc-phosphate ternary glassy system: A comparative study

The present investigation goal was to investigate the chemistry of four new mononuclear mixed ligand Fe(III), Co(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) complexes constructed from furfural-type imine ligand (L), and the co ligand 2,2′-bipyridine in addition to assessing their antimicrobial activity against some bacterial, and fungi strains. The structure of the complexes was interpreted by different spectroscopic techniques such as MS, IR, 1H NMR, UV–Vis, elemental analysis, TG-DTG, conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The correlation of all results revealed that ligand (L) acts as a neutral ONNO tetradentate whereas the co ligand acts as a neutral NN bidentate. The coordination of the ligands with the metal ions in a molar ratio of 1:1:1 leads to formation of an octahedral geometry around the metal ions. The octahedral geometry has been validated and optimized by DFT analysis. Conductivity data showed the electrolytic nature of all complexes. The thermal stability of all complexes was deduced in addition to evaluating some thermodynamic, and kinetic parameters using Coats–Redfern method. Furthermore, all complexes in comparison to their parent ligands were tested for their biological potency against some pathogenic bacterial, and fungi strains using the paper disk diffusion method. [CdL(bpy)](NO3)2 complex revealed the highest antimicrobial activity.

A host glass network of 70B2O3–10Pb3O4–18ZnO–2Er2O3 (ErCoCu1) was proposed and the impact of 1 mol% of Co or/and Cu ions on its structural, thermal, optical, and green emission properties was studied extensively. The X-ray diffraction spectra confirmed the amorphous structure of the produced glasses. Density and density-based parameters behavior showed that the Co or/and Cu ions fill the interstitial positions of the proposed ErCoCu1 network, causing its compactness. Both ATR-FTIR and Raman Spectra affirmed the formation of the fundamental structural units of the borate network, B–O–B linkage, BO3, and BO4. Additionally, the penetration of Co or/and Cu ions inside the ErCoCu1 converts the tetrahedral BO4 units to triangle BO3 causing its richness by non-bridging oxygens. The addition of Co or/and Cu reduces the glass transition temperature as a result of the conversion of the BO4 to BO3 units. Optical absorption spectra for the host glass ErCoCu1 showed many of the distinguished absorption bands of the Er3+ ion. Penetration of Co ion generates two broadbands referring to the presence of Co2+ ions in both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination and Co3+ ions in the tetrahedral coordination. In the Cu-doped glasses, the characteristic absorption bands of Cu2+ and Cu+ were observed. A green emission was generated from the ErCoCu1 glass under 380 nm excitation wavelength. Moreover, no significant effect of Co or/and Cu on the emission spectra was recorded. The considered glasses had appropriate properties qualifying them for optoelectronics and nonlinear optics applications.

In this research, we investigated the structural and biological properties of phosphate glasses (PGs) after the addition of V2O5. A xV2O5∙(100 − x)[CaF2∙3P2O5∙CaO] glass system with 0 ≤ x ≤ 16 mol% was synthesized via a conventional melt-quenching technique. Several analysis techniques (dissolution tests, pH, SEM-EDS, FT-IR, and EPR) were used to obtain new experimental data regarding the structural behavior of the system. In vitro tests were conducted to assess the antitumor character of V2O5-doped glass (x = 16 mol%) compared to the matrix (x = 0 mol%) and control (CTRL-) using several tumoral cell lines (A375, A2780, and Caco-2). The characterization of PGs showed an overall dissolution rate of over 90% for all vitreous samples (M and V1–V7) and the high reactivity of this system. EPR revealed a well-resolved hyperfine structure (hfs) typical of vanadyl ions in a C4v symmetry. FT-IR spectra showed the presence of all structural units expected for P2O5, as well as very clear depolymerization of the vitreous network induced by V2O5. The MTT assay indicated that the viability of tumor cells treated with V7-glass extract was reduced to 50% when the highest concentration was used (10 µg/mL) compared to the matrix treatment (which showed no cytotoxic effect at any concentration). Moreover, the matrix treatment (without V2O5) provided an optimal environment for tumor cell attachment and proliferation. In conclusion, the two types of treatment investigated herein were proven to be very different from a statistical point of view (p < 0.01), and the in vitro studies clearly underline the cytotoxic potential of vanadium ions from phosphate glass (V7) as an antitumor agent.
