This study, concerns the improvement of the hardness and resistance to wear of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface by means of thermochemical treatment, for obtaining coatings on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy gives performance of resistance to wear phenomena. Three-thermochemical treatment time (2h, 4h, and 6h) was chosen for investigation of the effect of such treatment on this alloy. The hardness test under an indentation load of 50 gf with a Vickers pyramidal indenter revealed that the surface hardness is 335 Hv for the untreated samples. On the other hand the hardness reaches approximately 1500 Hv during gas cementation at 930 °C for variable times (2h, 4h, 6h) followed by quenching at 840 °C in an oil medium, which was accompanied by a significant improvement in wear resistance. The characterization of the modified surface layers was made by means of a microscopic analysis and by X-ray diffraction. The case-hardening made it possible to obtain a wear resistance greater than that of the alloy not treated, minimal loss of mass by dry friction and an improvement in roughness as well as a good coefficient of friction.

“…The friction coefficients of the AsRec-EN24 tested dry under the normal loads of 1 N and 5 N are 0.86 and 0.81, respectively. The ConHeatTreat of the AsRec-EN24 gives rise to the lower friction coefficients of 0.84 for 1 N and 0.78 for 5 N. The DeepCryoTreat of the ConHeatTreat-EN24 results in the further lower friction coefficients of 0.81 for 1 N and 0.72 for 5 N. Since a larger contact area between two rubbing surfaces gives rise to higher friction via a larger number of contact junctions between them, it is supposed that the decreased friction of the EN24 with ConHeatTreat and DeepCryoTreat results from its decreased contact area with its counter alumina ball during the dry sliding via its decreased wear [8,[27][28][29]. As-received (AsRec) EN24 steel was treated with conventional heat treatment (ConHeatTreat) without tempering followed by deep cryogenic treatment (DeepCryoTreat) as a supplemental treatment to study its tribological behaviour against alumina without or with mineral oil (MO) under different normal loads of 1 N and 5 N. The ConHeatTreat of the AsRec-EN24 obtained an 218.5% improvement in its hardness as the supplemental DeepCryoTreat of the ConHeatTreat-EN24 resulted in a 11.7% further improvement in its hardness. As a result, the ConHeatTreat-EN24 had the 67.5% and 56.3% lower wear volumes for 1 N and 5 N under dry condition and the 53.6% lower wear volume for 5 N under MO lubrication condition compared to those of the AsRec-EN24, respectively. The DeepCryoTreat-EN24 had the 11.5% and 39.7% lower wear volumes for 1 N and 5 N under dry condition and the unmeasurable wear volume for 5 N under MO lubrication condition compared to those of the ConHeatTreat-EN24, respectively. It could be concluded that the supplemental DeepCryoTreat further improved the hardness and thereby the abrasive wear resistance of the ConHeatTreat-EN24 under both dry and lubrication conditions.

On s’est intéressé dans ce travail à l’analyse du comportement à l’usure et au frottement de deux prothèses totales de hanche en acier AISI 316L et en alliage à base de titane Ti-6Al-7Nb. Les propriétés tribologiques d’usure par glissement sont évaluées à l’aide d’un tribomètre TriboTechnic muni du logiciel tribotester, en accord avec les standards ASTM G 133–95, ISO 7148-1:2012 et ASTMG 99, en présence d’un milieu physiologique (solution de Hank) à une température de 28 à 30 °C. La bille en alumine (Al2O3) a été choisie comme antagoniste. Trois vitesses (1, 6 et 15 mm.s−1) et quatre forces normales (2,4,6 et 10 N) ont été appliquées. Après chaque essai de frottement, l’état de surface a été analysé par un microscope électronique à balayage. Le coefficient de frottement et le volume d’usure étaient plus faibles dans les échantillons testés à une force appliquée de 2 N sous une vitesse de 1 mm.s−1 (0,12 et 0,33) et (0,07 × 107 et 0,09 × 107 μm3) pour l’acier AISI 316L et le Ti-6Al-7Nb, respectivement. Les valeurs du coefficient de frottement obtenues respectent les normes imposées par le domaine du biomédical notamment au niveau de l’état de surface articulaire des prothèses de hanche.
