The effect of two different blends of essential oil components on the proliferation of Clostridium perfringens in the intestines of broiler chickens

Abstract: The effect of 2 different blends of essential oils on Clostridium perfringens (Cp) in the intestine and feces of broiler chickens was tested in 6 field trials for each blend. One hundred parts per million of the blends were mixed in a commercial corn-based diet throughout the entire growing period for experimental flocks. Samples from the jejunum, cecum, cloaca, and feces were taken on d 14, 21, and 30 from experimental and control flocks and tested quantitatively for Cp via blood agar plate, litmus milk mediu… Show more

“…Animal trials have also demonstrated the promising effects of EOs against the colonisation and proliferation of Clostridium perfringens (Mitsch et al, 2004;Di Pasqua et al, 2007). The mechanism by which the essential oils exert their antimicrobial activity is poorly understood but the main target appears to be the cell membrane of bacterial cells (Burt, 2004;Di Pasqua et al, 2007).…”

“…Segundo Mitsch et al (2004), a mistura dos princípios ativos eugenol, timol e carvacrol, constituintes do óleo essencial de orégano, tem efeito na estimulação das enzimas digestivas, estabilização da microbiota intestinal e inativação de toxinas de algumas bactérias. Dessa maneira, pode-se justificar a semelhança entre o desempenho das aves submetidas aos tratamentos T1 e T3.…”

“…C. difficile is a known potential resident of the livestock intestinal tract and has been identified in up to 12% of sampled retail ground beef and ground pork in a Canadian study [34]. Clostridium perfringens, the leading cause of necrotic enteritis, can also become a human health issue and has been isolated as a portion of the natural microflora of the jejunum, cecum, and cloaca of poultry [35]. Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen most commonly associated with dairy products [36].…”
