“…Accordingly, optically resolvable imaging in lipid bilayer membranes involving at least three components reported the coexistence of a liquid-disordered (L d ) phase, formed mainly from unsaturated phospholipids (9 -14), with a liquid-ordered (L o ) phase formed from saturated phospholipids and sphingolipids in the presence of cholesterol (8,15,16). In the latter, a higher degree of conformational order is imposed on the acyl tails of lipids by the rigid ring structure of cholesterol (17), increasing the thickness of the lipid bilayer and lipid packing, although lipids remain laterally mobile.
