The Effect of Victim Resistance on Rape Completion: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: When confronted with a sexual attacker, women are often extremely concerned with avoiding rape completion. While narrative reviews typically suggest that the victim resistance is linked to rape avoidance, much of the existing literature relies on overlapping samples from the National Crime Victimization Survey. The current meta-analysis examines whether victim resistance is related to a greater likelihood of avoiding rape completion. Results from a systematic literature search across 25 databases supplemented … Show more

“…Of particular interest is that women correctly identified relatively weaker male vocalizers on only 25% of trials, and tended to judge similar strength male vocalizers as stronger than themselves. Awareness of this negative bias may inform confidence-based interventions (already shown to ameliorate the “confidence gap” in cognitive tasks, Bench et al., 2015 , Ehrlinger and Dunning, 2003 , Estes and Felker, 2012 ) in sexual assault resistance programs ( Jordan and Mossman, 2017 , Senn et al., 2015 , Senn et al., 2017 , Wong and Balemba, 2016 ).…”

“…It is, therefore, useful to study other crime scene details, such as the victim’s behaviour, and if the offender or victim had been drinking alcohol before the assault [ 19 , 27–29 ]. Studies on rape characteristics have considered the manner of penetration, offender-victim relationship [ 30 ], when and where the rape occurred [ 31 ] and victim resistance [ 32 ]. Age and civil status are also well-established correlates of criminal victimization, including rape [ 33 ], which is a crime primarily perpetrated against younger women [ 6 , 19 ].…”

“…The legal system seeks visible signs of resistance because when it is absent, it is more difficult to prove a sexual assault . However, a substantial number of victims do not resist the attacker in any way . In humans, TI has been described as an involuntary, temporary state of motor inhibition in response to situations involving intense fear.…”
