The effect of video information on anxiety levels in women attending colposcopy: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Objective: The aim was to investigate whether additional information, in video form, reduces anxiety, depression and pain levels in women referred for colposcopy. “…Our findings regarding anxiety reduction are in agreement with those obtained by other studies, none of which found an association between an intervention and anxiety reduction in women referred for colposcopy (Ketelaars et al, 2017; Byrom et al, 2002; Greimel et al, 1997). Only music during the colposcopy significantly reduces anxiety (Chan et al, 2003).…”

“…Recently, Ketelaars et al investigated whether anxiety might be reduced by means of a hospital-dependent non-animation information video. However, they found no significant anxiety reduction compared to women receiving a standard brochure (Ketelaars et al, 2017). They recommended standardising the pre-colposcopy information.…”

“…Similar to our findings, another study found no statistically significant difference between patients who received standard information before colposcopy and those who additionally received video information (14). However, patient satisfaction was high and anxiety reduced in those who saw the video (14). Also, the high satisfaction with the nursing staff in the present study is similar to the findings of other studies on patients undergoing 18 F-FDG PET/ CT (4-6).…”

“…Anxiety among patients in a gynecological setting has been measured using different scales such as the Psychological Consequences Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, and different versions of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) [5,6,9]. STAI has the advantage of measuring both trait anxiety, which is considered stable over time, and state anxiety, which is affected by stressful situations such as receiving an abnormal screening result [10,11].…”
