The Effect of Wai Tan Kung on Autonomic Nervous Modulation in the Elderly

Abstract: The decline in physical capacity in the elderly can be ameliorated by low-velocity, low-impact exercises. Wai tan kung (WTK), a traditional Taiwanese conditioning exercise, is suitable for older people. This study evaluated the effect of WTK on autonomic nervous modulation in the elderly. Twenty WTK practitioners and 20 normal controls were recruited in this study. The stationary state spectral heart rate variability (HRV) measures, hemodynamics, and spirometry between the WTK group and normal controls and seq… Show more

“…The decrease in the LF power and the LF/HF ratio after the practice of CM suggests a shift toward vagal dominance. This is similar to HRV changes (Lu & Kuo, 2003). The immediate effect of practicing Wai Tan Kung was to enhance vagal modulation and to suppress sympathetic modulation.…”

“…It is already known that both WTK and TCC improve the health of the subjects (Lu and Kuo, 2003a;2003b). While independent studies of TCC and WTK have compared practicing vs. non-practicing controls, no previous study has been done to compare these two similar but distinct forms of Oriental calisthenics.…”

“…HRV offers a reliable measure of cardiovascular autonomic responses, and the frequency domains of HRV consist of high-frequency (HF), low-frequency (LF), and very-low-frequency (VLF) components ( 15 ). HF represents exclusively parasympathetic activity ( 16 ), and VLF reflects neuroendocrine and thermoregulatory influences on the heart ( 17 ), renin–angiotensin–aldosterone modulation ( 18 ), and vagal withdrawal ( 19 ). LF is proposed to reflect a complex mix of sympathetic, parasympathetic, and other unidentified factors ( 20 ).…”
