The Effect of Wear on the Performance of a Rotary Lip Seal

Abstract: Theoretical analysis, combined with experimental verification, is used to study the effect of wear on the performance of a rotary lip seal as characterized by the pumping rate and friction torque. The performance of a rotary lip seal is determined by the sealing lip surface microscopic characteristics and contact characteristics at the sealing zone. The variation of the contact characteristics with wear has been established based on the variation of the sealing lip profiles measured by using a trilinear coordi… Show more

“…The common characteristic value for wear at the sealing edge of a radial lip seal is the wear (band) width [3,8,14]. It can be measured directly and determines the contact band width and thus the sealing function [15]. The tribological function of the radial lip seal is directly dependent on the pressure and specifically on the pressure distribution in the sealing contact.…”

“…The wear of seal would change the sealing lip profile, and thus affects sealing performance and service lifetime. 13 In order to analyze the wear of the seal, macroscopic simulation methods are commonly used in the past. Békési et al.…”

“…Guo et al. 13 studied the effects of seal wear on the performance of rotary lip seal, including pumping rate and friction torque. According to the research results, the pumping rate decreases first sharply and then gradually, the friction torque first increases sharply and then decreases gradually.…”

“…With the change of the lip profile, the contact width and contact pressure on the sealing zone are changed accordingly. Since the sealing performance is significantly dependent on the contact width and contact pressure, the wear of the sealing lip would lead to a continuous change of the sealing behaviors, including friction, leakage, and so on [ 19 ].…”
