Most of these studies analyzed the radiation induced effects by subsequent thermal decomposition of the irradiated potassium permanganate whereby a distinct correlation between the absorbed radiation energy and the rate of decomposition was observed. Another approach to evaluate the effects of radiation in this system involved the study of the reactions of recoiling manganese atoms [7] generated by nuclear processes such as 5B Mn (η, γ) M Mn or 66 Mn (n, 2n) Si Mn.Here as in many other systems containing oxyanions, it was found that pre-or postirradiation can change significantly the nature and yield of products formed via recoil reactions of the manganese. This latter approach resulted also in the development of a reliable analytical method of determining the oxidation state of the manganese species after dissolution in aqueous solvents [8], By using this technique COGNEAU, APERS and CAPRON [9] showed that under irradiation conditions as typical in M Mn recoil studies (neutron flux: 10 11 neutrons/cm 2 sec, exposure times less than 10 min; total absorbed gamma dose 1.
