The effect of zirconia or titanium as abutment material on soft peri‐implant tissues: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Overall, the research does not support any obvious advantage of Ti or Zr abutments over each other. However, there is a significant tendency in Zr abutments evoking better color response of peri-implant mucosa and superior esthetic outcome measured by PES score.

“…This lack of significant differences when comparing the changes in MBL among the different abutment materials has also been reported in a recently published systematic review (Linkevicius & Vaitelis, 2015) as well as in experimental in vivo studies, where different abutment materials have resulted in similar histological outcomes by means of histomorphometric evaluation of the periimplant hard tissues (Blanco et al, 2016;Mehl et al, 2016).…”

“…However, esthetic demand is more critical, especially in the anterior regions of the mouth. As a way to achieve optimal esthetics, zirconia (ZrO 2 ) ceramic restorations [1], abutments [2], and implants [3] have been attractive in dentistry due to their high biocompatibility, esthetic properties of white color, and outstanding mechanical properties [4].…”

“…Partial and complete rehabilitation of edentulous patients with endosseous oral implants is scientifically accepted and well documented . Titanium (Ti) and its compounds are the materials most commonly used because of their mechanical strength, chemical stability, excellent biocompatibility and osseointegration . The screw‐type implant aids in the easy acquisition of primary stability.…”
