The effectiveness of e-Learning on biosecurity practice to slow the spread of invasive alien species

Abstract: Online e-Learning is increasingly being used to provide environmental training. Prevention measures including biosecurity are essential to reducing the introduction and spread of invasive alien species (IAS) and are central to international and national IAS policy. This paper is the first to evaluate the effectiveness of e-Learning as a tool to increase awareness, risk perception and biosecurity behaviour in relation to IAS among individuals conducting work activities or research (fieldwork) in the field. We s… Show more

“…Some reasons for failure are content, comfort level with technology, as well as availability of technical support [ 15 ], gaps in terms of three dimensions (ethical, evaluation, and management) [ 16 ], effective planning of ELS and a lack of experience [ 17 ]. On the other side, the key factors for the successful implementation of ELS are the presence of a culture favorable to EL among students [ 18 ], computer literacy, availability of appropriate technology, accessibility, and having a good high bandwidth internet connection [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Among these are the characteristics of the individuals themselves and the attributes of the invasive alien species itself. Since perceptions are socially and culturally constructed, individuals with different demographic profiles are expected to have different perceptions of IAS and attitudes toward their management (Shackleton et al 2019 ). One such demographic variable is place of residence although this has yet to be fully explored in IAS social dimensions studies: i.e.…”

“…The development of formal, internationally recognised, qualifications that deliver high standards of professional excellence in biosecurity is viewed as an essential step to respond to the increasing exposure of society and the environment to biological threats [ 58 ]. Although in many areas professional qualifications already exist [ 59 , 60 ], they are rarely sufficiently comprehensive to meet contemporary biosecurity challenges. Academic institutions and employers must recognise that biosecurity is a multidisciplinary field that draws on a wide range of subjects including epidemiology, pathobiology, economics, social behaviour, and invasion science.…”
