“…Established psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy were found to be the most effective for treating adolescent depression ( Zhou et al, 2015 ). Emerging treatments such as mindfulness-based interventions have also gained popularity and a supportive evidence base regarding treating youth depression in the last decade ( Kallapiran et al, 2015 ; Zoogman et al, 2015 ; Felver et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Parents can play an important role in the development of their children’s self-compassion skills ( Moreira et al, 2018 ). Through a mindful parenting approach, parents encourage the non-judgmental acceptance of difficult emotional states and foster the use of adaptive strategies of emotion regulation, leading to better adjusted psychological outcomes ( Townshend et al, 2016 ; McKee et al, 2017 ). Mindful parenting is a parenting style characterized by intentionally bringing mindful awareness to everyday parent-child interactions ( Kabat-Zinn and Kabat-Zinn, 1997 ; Bögels and Restifo, 2015 ) through the following important parenting practices or skills: directing complete attention to the child and being fully present during parent–child interactions; adopting an attitude of compassion, sensitivity, and responsiveness toward the child; adopting an attitude of non-judgmental acceptance of the self as a parent and of the challenges of parenting; self-regulating parents’ own emotions and behaviors in the parent–child relationship in accordance with parenting values and goals; and developing emotional awareness of the self and the child ( de Bruin et al, 2014 ; Moreira and Canavarro, 2017b ).…”

“…Means for CU traits (via the ICU) range from 23.45 to 31.05 in community adolescent samples (Roose et al, 2010;Feilhauer et al, 2012). Still, we caution that our results may be less generalizable to individuals with clinical diagnosis of DBD because our range of externalizing scores (expect the one with very high score) is rather limited (e.g., 0-16), whereas prior reports of externalizing behavior for adolescent in clinical samples range from 18.92 to 27.2 (Bögels et al, 2008;Bjork et al, 2010;Schaeffer et al, 2014). Similarly, ranges for CU traits in our sample (after excluding the outliers) were diverse (13-38, mean = 23.8), while detainee and offender samples report total score means ranging from 23 to 41 (Kimonis et al, 2008(Kimonis et al, , 2013White et al, 2013).…”
