The Effects of a Home-Based Combined Motor Control and Ergonomic Program on Functional Ability and Fear of Falling: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Physical exercise is a key intervention for improving functional ability and preventing falls in older people. However, the implemented interventions targeted balance, gait, and muscle strength, while little is known regarding motor control exercises in this population. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a 12-week home-based motor control exercise program combined with an ergonomic home modification (the McHeELP program).

“…Results provides evidence that the intervention was acceptable since the participants had high adherence and benefits regarding perceived value of the intervention were high with no serious harms. There has been extensive research into structured exercise programmes for older people with sarcopenia[ 15 , 24 - 26 ]. A feasibility or pilot trial is ideal for assessing whether participants will adhere to an intervention and may also explore factors that influence adherence, including intervention type and setting.…”

“…In addition, the booklet of exercises highlights the correct movement execution and therefore is recommended[ 41 ]. One more possible advantage of the McHeELP programme is the ability to provide a well-structured exercise programme without added special and expensive equipment or technology expenditures[ 11 , 14 - 15 ].…”

“…These findings extend previous meta-analyses in which home-based exercise improved walking speed 14,29,45 and reduced of the fear of falling in older adults. 42 Although home-based exercise may improve physical function, several factors, including the intensity of activity, social interaction, and level of supervision, may play an important role in psychosocial outcomes. 47 Furthermore, other studies highlight that activity supervised by health providers may play an important role in outcomes for home-based exercise programs.…”
