The Effects of Adjuvant Fermented Wheat Germ Extract on Cancer Cell Lines: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE; trade name AVEMAR) is a natural compound derived from industrial fermentation of wheat germ. Its potential anticancer properties has emerged from recent studies. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the data available in the scientific literature concerning the in vitro activity of FWGE on malignant cells. A systematic review of English articles in electronic databases has been performed. The primary outcomes of the review regarded types of cancer cell lines sub… Show more

“…In our studies, both 1% and 2% of FWGE increased cell viability compared to control cells. In the literature, FWGE was mostly examined on tumor cell lines where FWGE induced apoptosis and cell death in several cases [ 32 ]. 1 or 2% of FWGE did not preserve cell viability when 8 μ mol/L DON was added to the cells.…”

“…Second, loss of dental elements can lead to dietary changes, with a loss of nutrition being significant for the body as it can lead to the risk of malnutrition, which promotes the onset of dementia [39]. Finally, the chronic systemic inflammation that is taken into consideration in the etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease finds further support from the local inflammatory status determined by periodontitis, which is the main cause of the loss of dental elements in adults.…”

“…Moreover, NAD + increases G6PDH activity [ 20 ]. Several nutraceutical products have been shown to inhibit G6PDH and could be used therapeutically, like Fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) (Metatrol ® , Avemar ® , Polydatin or Piceid (major Resveratrol derivative) [ 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”
