The effects of array structure and secondary cognitive task demand on processes of visual search

Abstract: Cognitive distraction interferes with our ability to search for targets, increasing search times. Here we consider whether effects of cognitive distraction interfere differentially with three distinct phases of search: initiating search, overtly scanning through items in the display, and verifying that the object is indeed the target of search once it has been fixated. Furthermore, we consider whether strategic components of visual search that emerge when searching items organized into structured arrays are su… Show more

“…There are larger amount of horizontal than vertical saccades during the task, even if the grid-like pattern is heavily distorted (ie, items are displayed irregularly and not on every junction of the grid) [26]. Further research has shown that the stage of verification process takes longer when the grid-like pattern is more distorted while search initiation and scanning time are not affected [3].…”

“…These target items are defined by one or several distinct features such as shape or color [1]. During visual search three subprocesses are distinguishable: initiation of search, overt search of visual display, and verification of target [3]. The overall process of visual search can be described as either efficient or inefficient; which search type is used depends on the environment.…”

“… 17 , 18 Cognitive overload leads to restricted eye movements, 19 fewer attentive eye movements, fewer fixations, 20 longer fixation duration, and longer verification times. 21 Such effects have been demonstrated in many real-world tasks, such as automobile driving, 22 , 23 aviation, and water safety. 24 In surgical settings, eye-tracking has been used to explore team dynamics during simulated training and operations.…”

“…As a result, developer businesses should employ proper marketing and promotion strategies, as well as adequate measures of pleasure factors, while developing learning features for social networks in order to improve utilization intention. Developers should put more effort into building programs that are more pleasant and pleasurable to use for learning objectives, because in real situations searching and learning are often conducted while internal and external factors compete for our attention resources (Savage et al, 2018 ). According to student answers, facilitating conditions such as the help menu or support services for managing Facebook/Meta activity are important drivers of Facebook/Meta adoption.…”
