“…Early research into the benefits of standing desks primarily focused on health benefits for the K-12 [Kindergarten (pre 1st grade) to 12th grade (pre-college)] student segment. For example, studies have shown that standing desks are associated with increased calorie/energy expenditure (Benden et al , 2011, 2012, 2014; Reiff et al , 2012; Roemmich, 2016), reduced sedentary behavior (Pickens et al , 2016), less postural discomfort (Benden et al , 2013), lower BMI (Wendel et al , 2016), enhanced attention and behavioral engagement (Blake et al , 2012; Finch et al , 2017; Rollo et al , 2019), improved academic engagement (Dornhecker et al , 2015; Rollo et al , 2019), greater neurocognitive executive function and working memory (Mehta et al , 2015) and cognitive performance (Kidokoro et al , 2019). Furthermore, a standing desk in the college classroom was associated with significantly improved cardiometabolic health (Silva et al , 2018; Winkler et al , 2018), higher energy expenditure and decreased waist size (Contardo Ayala et al , 2018).…”
