The effects of collaboration and punishment on prospective memory performance in a group setting

Abstract: Remembering to perform a delayed intention is termed prospective memory (PM). Often delayed intentions are shared by more than one person; however, there is a dearth of studies examining PM in social settings. We aimed to investigate whether the potential consequences of one's behavior across diverse group settings influence PM performance in event-and time-based tasks. A total of 207 participants were randomly allocated to either an individual, collaborative, or collaborative plus penalty motivation condition… Show more

“…Furthermore, among n = 76 participants, task-based fMRI was collected during a prospective memory paradigm, together with the prospective and retrospective memory questionnaire [68][69][70]. However, as the prolonged duration of the total MRI scanning protocol (±2.5 hours) led to significant recruitment difficulties, the acquisition of the task was discontinued to preserve the feasibility of the study.…”

“…Additionally, PM is crucial for proper human functioning in all aspects of life, given its fundamental role in meeting personal or work deadlines in the context of goal-oriented and organized behavior. Moreover, PM can be investigated from several viewpoints, thus addressing psychological mechanisms (Anderson, McDaniel, & Einstein, 2017;Del Missier, Stragà, Visentini, Munaretto, & Mäntylä, 2021;Scullin et al, 2018;Shelton & Scullin, 2017, Smith, 2003, 2017, social influences (Altgassen, Cohen, & Jansen, 2021;Brandimonte, Ferrante, Bianco, & Villani, 2010;Penningroth, Scott, & Freuen, 2011), similarities and differences between species (Crystal & Wilson, 2015), neural underpinnings (e.g., Cona, Scarpazza, Sartori, Moscovitch, & Bisiacchi, 2015), computational aspects, and rational analyses (Atkin & Cohen, 1996). Thus, any advancement that sheds light on general aspects of PM functioning in one area of cognitive science has the potential to cross-fertilize research in other areas.…”
