The effects of different levels of N, P and K on the yields, nitrogen content and kernel weights of malting barley (var. Proctor)

Abstract: The effects of N, P and K applied broadcast on yields, percentage nitrogen and kernel weights of barley were studied over two seasons. The average yield increase over thirteen sites was 5-1 cwt and 8-2 cwt from applications of 35 lb and 70 lb/acre of fertilizer N respectively. A mean yield increase of 4-4 cwt/ acre was obtained from 27 lb P at four sites where the soil phosphorus test did not exceed 2 ppm P. Potassium applied at rates varying from 0 to 168 lb K/acre increased yields at one site only and decreas… Show more

“…Starch concentration varied from environment to environment for both two-row and six-row barley cultivars ( (Car et al 1992), soil pH (Calder and Macleod 1974), weather (Gately 1968 (Bhatty et al 1974) and on swine (Bhatty et al 1979). Two-row and six-row barleys produced the same growth in broiler chicks (Classen et al 1985).…”

In a study of trials carried out by the National Increasing increments of fertilizer nitrogen inlnstitute of Agricultural Botany over the 5-year period creased both the grain yield and grain protein content 1962-67, Dent et al (1968) reported that although of spring malting barley (Widdowson et al 1961, differences in the grain nitrogen content of spring 1982; Gately 1968;Timmer el al. 1991).…”

Protein concentration ofbarley was also influenced by environmental conditions and Gatley (1968) found that weather was the main factor influencing grain N concentration.…”

“…Protein concentration and yield tend to be inversely related (Zubriski 1970;Gately and McAleese 1976: Jackson and Dubbs i987; Lord and Vaughan 1987). The increase in protein concentration with increasing N level tended to be lower at higher moisture contents (Bole and Pittman 1980).…”
