Biofilms can make good bioindicators and biomarkers, offering a convenient tool to monitor metal contamination in streams that results from mine tailing sites. Biofilm metal content (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) as well as diatom diversity and the presence of teratologies (diatom abnormalities) were determined for biofilms from rivers with a variety of physicochemical properties across a metal contamination gradient. The results of metal accumulation were highly consistent from year to year, with significant relationships between calculated free metal ion concentrations and biofilm metal contents for samples from different rivers. This indicates the "universal nature" of the metal accumulation process in biofilms. The authors observed that protons and major cations protected against metal accumulation. A very low number of diatom taxa were found at the most contaminated sites, and the highest proportions of deformities were observed at these sites. However, it was difficult to distinguish the effect of metal contamination from the effect of other parameters, especially pH. The results suggest that the development of biofilm-based proxies for metal bioavailability is useful and that incorporation of the effects of hardness and pH in this metal contamination monitoring tool is important. The first studies of diatoms and river pollution were carried out 60 years ago, and the suitability of these micro-algae as bioassessment indicators for monitoring river quality was quickly demonstrated. The objective of this review is to describe the state of the art of the study of diatoms and river pollution between 1999 and 2009. The objective was to group the publications homogeneously according to subject and to indicate which subjects never overlap. To this end a lexical analysis was conducted on the abstract structure of these publications and seven K-means clusters were defined.

Diatoms are widely recognised as potentially useful biological indicators, and are increasingly incorporated into water quality monitoring in North America and Europe. Despite their potential there have been no diatom-based indices developed for New Zealand. Overseas, diatoms have been shown to be especially useful in the monitoring of acid mine drainage (AMD). We sampled diatoms from 39 streams along an AMD gradient on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. We developed two indices from relative abundance data; a single biotic index (pHBI) and a multimetric index (Diatom Mine Pollution Score [DMPS]). Both indices were able to categorise streams as circumneutral, moderately or severely impacted by AMD. However, neither index was able to differentiate naturally acidic streams (pH 4.0-5.7) from those moderately impacted by AMD. Diatom species responded to changes in acidity but were less affected by metals. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential usefulness of diatoms in monitoring the impacts of AMD, specifically acidity, in New Zealand streams.
