The effects of elastic band resistance training combined with blood flow restriction on strength, total bone‐free lean body mass and muscle thickness in postmenopausal women

Abstract: The main findings of this study were that moderate-to-high-intensity EB training and low-intensity EB training with BFR resulted in similar increases in strength, total bone-free lean body mass and muscle thickness.

“…Similar to the traditional strength training, low-load elastic band exercises with BFR for upper limbs for 2 months, three times a week, showed an increase on the strength similar to the high intensity group. In addition, a tendency for improving the total bone mass was also found [50].…”

“…Most part of the studies with BFR combine this technique with the strength training and in apparently healthy individuals; however, some researchers already have been investigating how the BFR can be used in special populations and associated with other types of exercise [47][48][49][50][51][52]. In the next session, some studies that used this technique in climacteric women and/ or with non-transmissible chronic diseases will be presented.…”

“…24 In addition, in the absence of exercise it can attenuate muscle loss. 25 Both younger and older individuals have benefited from this technique as well as those recovering from injury [25][26][27] . Although few clinical populations have used this technique, it appears that it could be an alternative treatment for these individuals.…”

“…30 In older men and women, low-intensity resistance exercise combined with BFR has also been shown to significantly increase strength and muscle size. [38][39][40] In addition, it has proved beneficial during rehabilitation from ACL surgery. After 16 weeks of combining BFR with traditional rehabilitation, knee extensor strength, knee flexor strength and knee extensor muscle CSA significantly recovered more compared to exercise without BFR.…”
