Environmental problems caused by excessive carbon emissions are becoming increasingly prominent and have received heightened attention in recent years. Encouraging people to adopt low-carbon behavior to reduce carbon emissions is desirable. Based on social learning theory, we developed and tested a moderated mediation model to investigate when and how environmentally specific servant (ESS) leadership impacts employees’ low-carbon behavior (i.e., private low-carbon behavior and public low-carbon behavior). We tested our theoretical framework with a sample of 483 subordinates and their direct supervisors working in northern China. The results indicate that ESS leadership is positively related to employees’ low-carbon behavior, and that environmental self-accountability plays a mediating role in this relationship. In addition, power distance orientation strengthens the direct effects of ESS leadership on employees’ environmental self-accountability and low-carbon behavior, as well as the indirect effect of ESS leadership on private low-carbon behavior via environmental self-accountability. Our findings contribute to the literature surrounding ESS leadership and low-carbon behavior, and help to promote green development and thus achieve the goals of carbon neutrality and decreasing carbon dioxide emissions.

The low-carbon transformation has turned out to be a challenging task faced by government agencies, enterprises, and society because of the global warming. Endorsing the expansion of the low-carbon revolution is considered as an essential measure for low-carbon alteration and advancement. Therefore, articulating realistic environmental control strategies intended to enhance the motivation level of low-carbon innovation, though outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) can produce direct and indirect influences on the growth of low-carbon innovation. According to the data of 30 provinces of China from 2004 to 2017, the relationship among environmental regulation, OFDI, and low-carbon innovation was analyzed using the spatial econometric model. Based on the analyzed data, the following conclusions were drawn. (i) From the national and regional perspectives, China’s low-carbon innovation takes understandable agglomeration features in the longitudinal dimension. In addition, environmental regulation plays a key role in promoting low-carbon innovation and regional heterogeneity. (ii) Environmental regulation might force enterprises outward foreign direct investment efficiently and increase the level of OFDI that will be capable of promoting low-carbon innovation. (iii) OFDI acts as an intermediary in the relationship between environmental regulation and low-carbon innovation, and this role has regional heterogeneity. (iv) There are significant spatial spillover effects of environmental regulation and OFDI on low-carbon innovation, environmental regulation on OFDI, and the intermediary effect of OFDI on environmental regulation and low-carbon innovation. This study supplements our understanding of the relationship between environmental regulation and OFDI, in addition to low-carbon innovation, which provides illumination for enterprise practice, as well as decision-makers.

Radical low-carbon innovations have considerable technological and revolutionary influences. These key technologies considerably reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This study examines the role of carbon finance development in China’s radical low-carbon innovations. The paper identifies the key entities involved, constructs a network model of the interaction between carbon finance and radical low-carbon innovation, and uses multi-agent simulation modeling to analyze the associated influence mechanism. The results demonstrate that the carbon market can promote radical low-carbon innovation by (1) regulating the number of enterprises participating subject to carbon emission regulations, (2) regulating the number of market intermediaries, (3) establishing the market regulation level, and (4) setting the carbon intensity reduction level. The paper concludes that the Chinese government can formulate novel carbon market-related policies and regulations that, in a timely manner, influence the relationship between the carbon market and participating entities to promote the development of radical low-carbon technologies.
