The Effects of Foliar Sprays with Different Silicon Compounds

Abstract: The use of foliar sprays with silicon compounds is relatively new. Initially (in 1990) foliar sprays with silicates were used. In 2003, foliar sprays with (stabilized) silicic acid were introduced, and more recently foliar sprays with silica nanoparticles have also been applied. Foliar sprays with silicates are effective as pesticides, while (stabilized) silicic acid sprays increase growth and yield and decrease biotic and abiotic stresses. The limited data on foliar silica-nano sprays show a tendency to decre… Show more

“…Kaolin showed an inhibitory effect in grape berry weight in the Cabernet Sauvignon cultivar [39], while another study showed an increase in grape berry weight upon its treatment [21]. Potassium silicate, as well as other silicates, did not influence the berry weight and production [26] in earlier studies. Present investigation suggests that kaolin and potassium silicate has no stimulatory effect on the berry weight and production.…”

“…Foliar exogenous application with silicate materials have been used since the 1990s; however, efficiency and safety issues have been largely overlooked [26]. Therefore, this work aimed to make a comparative study of the efficiency of different foliar mitigation treatment, namely with kaolin and potassium silicate on the grape berries (Vitis vinifera L. cv.…”

“…The foliar application of nano-SiO 2 increase the production systems of crops under unfavourable environmental conditions 44 . Foliar sprays with silicates are effective as pesticides, while silicic acid sprays increase growth growth and yield and decrease biotic and abiotic stresses 45 . With the use of nanotechnology, it has been improved the quality of modern agricultural practices by them technical, safer and improved quality in agricultural products nutritious 46 .…”

“…The total fruit yield plot -1 of squash recorded increase about 46 and 50% by 4gl -1 potassium silicate over the gained by control treatment(tap water) during the two seasons, respectively From the above mentioned results, it could be suggested that, the superiority of potassium silicate in this respect may be attributed to the combination effect between the two sources, silicate and potassium which potassium silicate contains. Silicon had profitable effects on plant growth, yield quality, stimulate photosynthesis and improvement the resistance of plant to abiotic and biotic stresses (Mitani and Ma, 2005, Abd-AlKarim et al, 2017and Laane, 2018. In the same time, the favorable effect of potassium on yield and its attributes might be interpreted to spraying potassium increased the available potassium which needed to accomplish the two processes flowering, as well as fruit setting and consequently reflected on all yield parameters.…”
