The effects of geometrical imperfections on the ultimate strength of aluminium stiffened plates subject to combined uniaxial compression and lateral pressure

Abstract: The present study aims at determining the effects of the geometrical imperfections on the ultimate strength and load-carrying capacity of aluminium stiffened plates under combined axial compression and lateral pressure. The finite element models proposed by the Committee III. 1 'Ultimate Strength' of ISSC'2003 are used in the present investigation. Initial imperfections as proposed by ISSC committee as well as those recommended by Ship Structure Committee are considered in the analyses. Models are tested using… Show more

“…Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were applied by Zareei et al (2012) in order to evaluate the ultimate strength of uniaxially compressed welded stiffened aluminium plates. Also, the effects of geometrical imperfections on the ultimate strength of aluminium stiffened plates subject to combined longitudinal compression and lateral pressure were studied by Khedmati et al (2014). This paper is the continuation of the study made by Khedmati et al (2010b), in order to further develop empirical formulations for the prediction of ultimate strength of continuous aluminium stiffened plates under combined transverse in-plane compression and lateral pressure.…”

“…A number of related studies are available in the literature in association with the direct measurement of welding-induced initial imperfections in steel or aluminium stiffened plate structures. For example, Masubuchi (1980), Smith et al (1988), Ueda (1999), Paik et al (2006), Paik (2007cPaik ( , 2008, , Vhanmane et al (2008), Luís et al (2009), Bruno et al (2011), Khedmati et al (2012), and Teresa et al (2013) provided measurement databases for the initial distortions of aluminum-plated structures; Masubuchi (1980), Smith et al (1988), Cheng et al (1996), Ueda (1999), and Kenno et al (2010Kenno et al ( , 2017 produced measurement databases for the residual stress on steel-plated structures; and Paik et al (2006), Paik (2008), and provided measurement database for residual stresses and the softening of aluminum-plated structures. Eggert et al (2012) and Lillemäe et al (2017) studied the effects of welding-induced residual stresses on the fatigue strength of steel-plated structures.…”

“…has been the subject of many works, as Basu et al, 2006;Edgren et al, 2006;Bai and Keller, 2009;Khedmati et al, 2014. Unexpected phenomena, as in multilayered copper subjected to plane strain compression, were experimentally observed, revealing different kinds of interface instability (saw-thoothed, wavy, double undulation, bifurcation, see the interesting paper Gotoh et al, 1993).…”
