The effects of ginsenoside Rb1 on endothelial damage and ghrelin expression induced by hyperhomocysteine

Abstract: Ghrelin can prevent Hcy-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction and structural damage. The compensatory elevation of plasma ghrelin levels in an Hcy-induced endothelial injury model may be a protective response. Ginsenoside Rb1 can significantly stimulate the ghrelin endocrine to inhibit endothelial injury. Ginsenoside also upregulates the NO signaling pathway reduced by Hcy through the ghrelin molecular mechanism.

“…Consistent with previous studies showing the protective effects of Rb1 on vascular cells against injury in vitro, 12,18) we report here that Rb1 reversed HUVECs senescence induced by H 2 O 2 through modulating endogenous antioxidants and pro-oxidants products. Although intensive research has been focused on Rb1 regarding to its protective effect on different cell type damage including endothelial 12,18) and neural cell, 19) few studies have investigated the potential anti-senescence or anti-aging role of Rb1, 20) especially for endothelial cells.…”

“…Interestingly, evidence has verified that ginsenoside Rb1 can increase NO production in endothelial cells. Ginsenoside Rb1 prevented homocysteine-induced endothelial dysfunction by upregulating endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)/NO production in human umbilical vein endothelial cells [15]. It was also shown to abate homocysteine-induced endothelial dysfunction by increasing NO production and eNOS phosphorylation via PI3K/Akt activation and PKC inhibition [16].…”

“…Huxin Formula mainly consists of ginseng, P. pseudoginseng , P. ternate , Citri reticulatae pericarpium . The pharmacological effects of these agents on cardiovascular diseases have been reported in a growing number of studies, especially for active ingredients such as ginsenosides [27,28] and notoginsenosides [29,30,31]. …”
