The Effects of Instructions on Mothers’ Ratings of Child Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms

Abstract: We examined whether instructional materials describing how to rate child ADHD symptoms would improve the accuracy of mothers' ratings of ADHD symptoms presented in standard child behavior stimuli, and whether instructions would be equally effective across a range of maternal depressive symptoms and family incomes. A community sample of 100 mothers with 5 to 12 year old sons were randomly assigned to either receive or not receive the instructions. All mothers watched standard video recordings of boys displaying… Show more

“…So far, there has been no evaluation of H1N1 respiratory function. The correlation between the mechanisms and the impact that viruses have on the respiratory system has been established in previous published studies [14-17,28,29,39-44]. As might be anticipated, we found a major decreased respiratory capacity (FEV1 -10.205, FVC -9.909, DLCO -12.409) between the measurements taken upon discharge and in the six-month follow-up.…”

“…Median PO 2 was 81.23 mmHg. Severe hypoxemia upon admission, defined as decreased partial pressure of oxygen in blood ≤ 60 mmHg with FiO 2 21% [29], was observed in 7/44 patients. There was no thrombocytopenia observed.…”

“…Apart from the modest correlation between maternal and paternal reports on ADHD [49], questionnaire responses used in many studies may be inconsistent and unreliable [50,51] and contain questions considered to be ambiguous [52]. Anxiety and depression symptomatology was investigated with previously validated scales [53].…”

“…[51] Another study showed that providing low-income mothers with video examples of typical children, children with ADHD, and children with ADHD plus a comorbidity, enabled them to more accurately characterize their own children's behaviors. [52] In communities with high levels of collective efficacy, this type of exposure to a wide range of childhood behaviors may be occurring in the context of everyday interactions with other parents and children in the community.…”
