Mine tailings are the byproduct of mining activities, which need to be disposed of once the minerals in the ore are extracted. They can be disposed of in either dry or wet forms. The latter is most common, with the tailings being disposed of in the form of slurry inside retention structures. The retention structure may be a natural or manmade dam, with a predominant use of the upstream method due to its cost-effectiveness. This study analyzes the stability of an upstream tailings dam considering its staged construction. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element model was developed using the program Plaxis 2-D to investigate the potential for stabilizing the tailings dam by using emulsified polymer and a mixture composed of cement kiln dust (CKD) and re-cycled gypsum (B). The numerical model demonstrated that utilizing a CKD: B mix increased the overall stability of the tailings impoundment above the conventional 1.5 safety factor requirements and indicated its usefulness in constructing robust dams whilst still being environmentally friendly.

Most of Arab countries areas are occupied with deserts that is covered with sandy soil. Thus, it is necessary to make use of this huge volume of sand to be as construction materials. It is proven that, sand is initially uneven and unstable. It requires pre-modifications of its primer properties in order to be used as construction materials. One of the common techniques is injecting the sand with binders. Many grouting techniques has been implanted to modify or rehabilitate the structure of soil but for sandy soil the methods has not yet been introduced Therefore, this study aimed at developing simulation and instrumental setup to be used for cement grouting. The simulation has been custom made and utilized to form grouted samples for further investigation. The method of injecting sand is by applying pressure to produce force flow in order to be injected into the sand. After the formation of injected sand samples, an experimental investigation was carried out to determine the basic properties. Shear strength of the sand was recorded before and after grouting. It was found that, the shear strength has increased after injecting the sand with cement and the setup has produced accurate grouted samples with even distribution of the cement mix. The results of the various investigations conclusively proved that grouting can be used as an effective way to improve the strength characteristics significantly and can also contribute to the stabilization of sand.

Flaws existing in rock mass are one of the main factors resulting in the instability of rock mass. Epoxy resin is often used to reinforce fractured rock mass. However, few researches focused on mechanical properties of the specimens with a resin-infilled flaw under triaxial compression. Therefore, in this research, epoxy resin was selected as the grouting material, and triaxial compression tests were conducted on the rock-like specimens with a grout-infilled flaw having different geometries. This study draws some new conclusions. The high confining pressure suppresses the generation of tensile cracks, and the failure mode changes from tensile-shear failure to shear failure as the confining pressure increases. Grouting with epoxy resin leads to the improvement of peak strengths of the specimens under triaxial compression. The reinforcement effect of epoxy resin is better for the specimens having a large flaw length and those under a relatively low confining pressure. Grouting with epoxy resin reduces the internal friction angle of the samples but improves their cohesion. This research may provide some useful insights for understanding the mechanical behaviors of grouted rock masses.
