The effects of L-carnitine on sperm parameters in smoker and non-smoker patients with idiopathic sperm abnormalities

Abstract: The results of this study indicate that smoker patients should not be excluded from the treatment with L-carnitine based on smoking alone.

“…Although the D100 rats have shown altered sperm transit time, as formerly mentioned, the carnitine-doxorubicin-treated rats showed normal values in various sperm parameters, including the caput/corpus sperm transit time. These data agree with previously published studies that mentioned an improvement of the spermatic parameters in infertile patients after carnitine treatment (Ng et al, 2004;Agarwal & Said, 2004;Kadhemi et al 2005).…”

“…L-carnitine stabilizes the mitochondrial membrane, increases supply of energy of the organelles and protects cells from apoptotic cell death (Pillich et al 2005). Oral L-carnitine (1 g of L-carnitine orally 3 · daily for 3 months) was effective in improving semen quality in men (Khademi et al 2005). Acidic seminal fluid protein found in bull seminal plasma can protect spermatozoa from oxidative damage (Schoeneck et al 1996), whereas seminal fluid steroids, such as dihydroepiandrosterone and some of its metabolites that have antioxidative properties, have been detected in human seminal fluid (Hampl et al 2003).…”

“…Our study indicated that the percentage of motile spermatozoa (grades A + B) is increased from 27.8% to 35.2% after 10 min treatment with 0.5 mmol/L l ‐carnitine, which is consistent with the result of Banihani (Banihani, Agarwal, Sharma, & Bayachou, ; Banihani, Sharma, Bayachou, Sabanegh, & Agarwal, ; Figure a,b). However, the influence of l ‐carnitine on sperm morphology (Khademi et al, ) and other parameters remains to be clarified.…”
