The Effects of Levetiracetam, Carbamazepine, and Sodium Valproate on P100 and P300 in Epileptic Patients

Abstract: The present study shows that LEV disrupts P300 latency less than VPA and CBZ and does not prolong P100 as much as them.

“…In the literature, other studies involving participants with different characteristics used the P300 to detect effects on cognitive processing of drug therapies, such as levetiracetam in the treatment of epilepsy, 43 use of perospirone in people with schizophrenia 44 and donepezil in the elderly with vascular dementia type. 45 The P300 has also proved sensitive in clinical trials involving additional and complementary therapies, such as vitamin B12 supplementation 46 and acupuncture.…”

“…Similar results were reported for other AEDs. In a group of patients with unspecified epilepsies on monotherapy with carbamazepine, levetiracetam, or VPA, no significant change was observed in P100 amplitude compared to healthy controls not taking medications (Tumay et al, 2013). Carbamazepine had no effect on SSVEP amplitude compared to healthy controls not taking any medication (Geller et al, 2005).…”
