a b s t r a c tBased on multi-year measurements of CH 4 exchange in sub-daily resolution we show that clear-cutting of a forest in Southern Germany increased soil temperature and moisture and decreased CH 4 uptake. CH 4 uptake in the first year after clear-cutting (À4.) was three times lower than during the pre-harvest period (À14.2 AE 1.3 mg C m À2 h À1 ). In contrast, selective cutting did not significantly reduce CH 4 uptake. Annual mean uptake rates were À1.18 kg C ha À1 yr À1 (spruce control), À1.16 kg C ha À1 yr À1(selective cut site) and À0.44 kg C ha À1 yr À1 (clear-cut site), respectively. Substantial seasonal and interannual variations in CH 4 fluxes were observed as a result of significant variability of weather conditions, demonstrating the need for long-term measurements. Our findings imply that a stepwise selective cutting instead of clear-cutting may contribute to mitigating global warming by maintaining a high CH 4 uptake capacity of the soil.

The spatial gradient of soil respiration from a logging road to the inner part of a forest, and the major environmental factors controlling soil respiration were studied in a hill dipterocarp forest in Peninsular Malaysia to examine the spatial effects of logging road construction on soil respiration. Soil respiration, soil temperature, and soil water content were measured at six points along a total of twenty-five 35-m transects. The logging road at the study site was constructed in 2009. The soil respiration rate on the logging road was very low (0.376 mol CO 2 m 2 s 1 ), and there were no significant differences between the roadside and inside the forest (4.76-5.95 mol CO 2 m 2 s 1 ). Path analysis showed that the soil respiration rate was affected by soil temperature and distance from the logging road. This finding differs from those of previous studies conducted in lowland tropical rain forests. We speculate that the low soil respiration rate on the road is primarily because of soil compaction and low concentrations of carbon-containing material. The soil temperature at the roadside (which was positively correlated with soil respiration) was higher than inside the forest. Despite the differences in soil temperatures, differences in soil respiration between the roadside and the inner parts of the forest were not significant, probably because of the small amount of litter present as a substrate for microbial respiration at the roadside and/or the occurrence of different microbial communities and biomass between the roadside and the inner parts of the forest.

This study was carried out to examine the relationships between seasonal variations of soil CO 2 efflux rates and soil environmental factors in matured Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis stands in the Wola national experimental forests, southern Korea. Soil CO 2 efflux rates were measured monthly from March 2015 to February 2016. Mean soil CO 2 efflux rates during the study period were significantly higher in the Q. variabilis (mean±standard error; 2.27±0.22 μmol m -2 s -1 ) than in the P. densiflora (1.63±0.12 μmol m -2 s -1 ) stands. Mean soil water content and pH were also significantly higher in the Q. variabilis (26.96±0.93%, pH 5.19) than in the P. densiflora (21.32±0.89%, pH 4.87) stands, while soil temperature was not significantly different between the P. densiflora (13.92±0.67°C) and in the Q. variabilis (13.52±0.70°C) stands. Q 10 values were higher in the Q. variabilis (3.35) than in the P. densiflora (2.72) stands. The results indicate that soil CO 2 efflux rates in Q. variabilis stand could be more sensitive by the change of soil temperature compared with P. densiflora stand under a similar site environmental condition.
